How it happened

On January 4th 2013, there was a three alarm fire at a warehouse business in northeast Harris county. Channel 13 and Channel 2(http://www.click2houston.com/news/3-alarm-fire-causes-explosions-at-warehouse/-/1735978/18009100/-/pnvbxpz/-/index.html)
reported on the story, the businesses located in warehouse strip were mainly automotive, the blaze was out of control mainly due to lack of adequate water  pressure that was unavailable when fire fighters were attempting to extinguish the flames.

The news outlets reported that no one was injured during the fire but that was not entirely true. As reported by people who reside in the area, there were animals tied up inside the building. One animal reportedly died and at the time of the fire, this animal, a boxer named Rocky was one of the animals at the building. Per witnesses, no aid was rendered to Rocky at the scene.

This photo of Rocky was taken the day of the fire as he ran around terrified.

A local community member reached out for help for him and two other smaller dogs that were seen locked inside a vehicle. Ms. Lucy Moreno, a local community animal advocate shared the information with others trying to find immediate assistance and with the help of a concerned law enforcement officer, we went out to the property to find the animals. The two smaller dogs were no longer in the vehicle, a person who lives onsite in an adjacent business, had taken the two dogs in. A welfare check was done on the two small dogs and they were found to be in decent condition, apparently their owner recently lost his home and is staying at the business with the animals. Aid was offered to him and we will be following up with some vaccines and food for the two smaller dogs. Additionally, should the situation become too unstable for the dogs, they have a place to go to, at this time there was no evidence that would provide cause for them to be removed.

What is astonishing is that even though this man was experiencing issues with his own home situation, he was found to be in possession of the third dog, Rocky, that was badly injured in the fire. Having no finances to help the dog, he still stepped up to try and offer him some type of assistance. He pleaded with the officer and those of at the scene to please help the dog, that no one had rendered aid to him.

January 6 12:20pm

The dog was in his building wrapped up in a quilt, when he was brought outside, we all thought he would probably have to be humanely euthanized. But something about Rocky just made us want to try and see if something more could be done for him, so he will be receiving an evaluation to see what, if anything, can be done.
He has burns primarily on his back and feet, in spite of this, his disposition is calm and gentle. He allowed myself and Ms. Moreno to handle and transport him without any aggression. If the veterinarian states Rocky stands a decent chance of recovering, help is going to be needed to fund it.

Rocky is being taken to Abbott Animal Clinic today and this will be updated with more information when we receive it. If you can help with anything at all, here is a link to a Chipin to give online: http://aidinganimalsworks.chipin.com/rocky-burnt-boxer. If you would rather give directly to the clinic, you can call 281- 893-5000, if you do call into the clinic please let us know so we can make sure that his account is credited accordingly.

Thank you all the people who did not walk away from this situation where others did not care to follow. Thank you to the officer who, as always, did not hesitate to render aid.

UPDATE Feedback from the Vet

Rocky is now at Abbott Animal Clinic and upon being evaluated was found to have a fever of 104F but he is alert which is in his favor. He smells pretty bad, like charcoal. The vet proceeded to give him an antibiotic injection to manage any infection that may be contributing to the fever as well as morphine to manage his pain.

He was also being treated with cold compresses to bring his fever down and the beginning stages of cleansing the wounds and treating them.

The vet gives Rocky a better then 50/50 chance of improving since he has been able to stay alert for the past 48 hours, most of his injuries are on the back and along the left side of his body, his feet and the tip of his left ear, that being said he does have a long road ahead of him. He will need debriding treatment for his skin, intravaneous fluids, and a host of medications to keep him from developing anymore infection then what he already has. He needs to be at the clinic for a few days, the estimate that we were given was $2000 and this is with a discount. We cannot do this alone, the alternative would be to euthanize Rocky rather then not treat him and allow him to suffer, and no one wants to do this after he has fought so much for the past two days. I cannot stress enough that the help of the community is needed to get this done, the Chipin amount has been revised to reflect the estimate cost that Abbott gave today.

As we receive updates on him. they will be added here. Please note that we are merely members of the community our resources are very limited, but all life is precious and when someone shows a will to live, well the right thing to do is help them.
UPDATE--1/7/13
Rocky was stabilized and moved to Aldine Animal Clinic today to continue a more long-term treatment plan. Channel 11, KHOU news aired a story on Rocky today and came out to the clinic to see him.
Here is the link to the video and story: http://www.khou.com/community/Rescuing-Rocky-185941392.html

Thank you to everyone who has given so far, it is a long road for Rocky, but he made it through the first couple of rounds and we are going for him to win the fight. At the request of some folks, a Facebook page has been created for Rocky so that his progress can be followed. You can see his page here: http://www.facebook.com/helprockyrise
Update---1/8/13 Rocky transferred to Aldine Animal Clinic
Rocky was transferred to Aldine Animal Clinic on Monday afternoon where he had his first procedure done to remove dead tissue, surgical debriding. He is alos receiving hydro-therapy. Overall, he is doing well, per the vet's update this evening. His temperature is stable, pain under control, and he's graduated to wearing a new "hat". Thank you to everyone who has given so far, Rocky's treatment will be ongoing, it's a process and without your help, it cannot happen. Whatever you can help with is appreciated.

Update 1/13/13

Rocky has had a couple of procedures done to surgically debride the burned areas of his left side. He has burns ranging from first to third degree, the most serious being his left rear leg/thigh area.

These are post-op photos.

This photo is of the areas after they have been "dressed" with a sort of medicated liquid bandage that promotes tissue granulation, allows formation of healthy tissues to begin covering these areas.

Rocky is making has made some improvements, is stable. Thank you to everyone who has helped so far.
